How Many Miles is a 5k?

Are you new to running? Or just not sure how far certain races are and what is a good time for each distance, you’ve come to the right place.

So, just how many miles is a 5k? 5k in miles – 3.1-miles or 3.10686 to be precise!

What is a good time for 5k?

The average finishing time for 5k is 30-40-minutes. A well trained runner can often run inside 20-minutes for the 5k distance. In terms of what makes a good time to put this into perspective the world record for 5k is currently 12:51 set by Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegai in Monaco and for the women, Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei who set her astonishing time of 14:32 during a 10k race! Recently Scottish athlete Beth Potter ran a 5k world best at the Podium 5k in Lancashire in 14:41 but was sadly not rectified at the time.

Couch to 5k training has become increasingly popular in recent times, with 5k the perfect distance for new runners building up to complete the distance for the first time.

Where to find a 5k Event

The obvious place to start if you’re looking to run a 5k event is parkrun. parkrun is an incredible initiative to encourage more people to live a healthier lifestyle and take part in their first running event. To find out if there’s a parkrun event close to you, head over to their website here. There’s also a host of 5k’s up and down the country on a weekly basis. Some of my favourite events over the years have been 5ks. If you’re local to the North West, I’d highly recommended Christleton 5k, Capenhurst 5k and Mid Cheshire 5k. If you want to take the next steps and train with an online running coach for your next event, I have a range of 5k training plans available here or please get in touch today to enquire about working with an online running coach.

All plans are delivered by TrainingPeaks and are packed with training tips and advice, plus complimentary access to JM Run Club.
