JM Coaching was founded in 2013 by Jonny Mellor, 2:08 marathon runner and former British Marathon Champion alongside his team of experienced coaches who have competed at Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games level. We take pride in bringing that elite-level expertise to runners of all abilities. Our training ideas fall in line with our own experiences as athletes competing all round the world and first hand experience of sharing our knowledge with all runners. Whether you're starting your running journey, or chasing a new PB, our coaching can help provide you with structure, guidance and support to achieve your goals.

We have three levels. Bronze is the entry point — a weekly plan via TrainingPeaks, unlimited WhatsApp and access to JM Run Club. Silver adds a kick-off call, pre-race calls and TrainingPeaks Premium for more regular feedback and contact. Gold is the most personal tier, with monthly one-to-one calls, GPS-synced workouts and race-day support. All plans are monthly rolling with no lock-in.

Most new starters go Bronze or Silver — they cover the essentials and suit the majority of runners well. Gold suits runners with a specific time goal or race target who want a very close working relationship with their coach. Not sure? For most runners, yes. The difference between structured, expert-led training and self-coaching is significant — you get progressive overload built correctly, an experienced eye on your data, accountability that keeps you consistent, and someone to flag injury risks before they become problems. Runners who invest in coaching typically progress faster and stay healthier than those going it alone.

Prices vary widely across providers. At JM Coaching, plans start from an accessible monthly fee — less than most gym memberships — and scale up depending on the level of contact and support you want. Your coach builds your weekly plan in TrainingPeaks, which syncs directly to your Garmin, COROS or Wahoo. After each session, your coach reviews your data and adjusts the upcoming week accordingly. Between sessions, WhatsApp is open for quick questions, niggles and feedback. Depending on your tier, you'll also have scheduled calls to review your training and plan ahead.

Absolutely. Coaching adapts to the runner in front of us, not a fixed template. Whether you've never run a 5k or you're chasing a marathon PB, we build your plan from scratch around your current fitness and goals. Our WhatsApp community and JM Run Club also provide extra support and motivation as you find your feet.

Plans are flexible by design. Coaches adjust around work, travel, family and anything else life throws at you — just drop your coach a message on WhatsApp and they'll adapt the week accordingly. Missing sessions is a normal part of real training; the key is communication and getting back on track, not trying to cram everything in.

Injury and missed sessions are a normal part of the coaching relationship — your coach has dealt with both many times before. They'll adapt the plan to reflect what's happened and support you back into training gradually. We'd always rather you take an extra rest day and return strong than rush back and make things worse.

At JM Coaching, WhatsApp is how you stay in contact with your coach between sessions — it's quick, direct and personal. You're not messaging a chatbot; you're talking to a real coach who knows your training. It's also how the wider JM Coaching community stays connected, sharing updates, race results and motivation with each other.

Yes — TrainingPeaks is the platform all plans are delivered through. A free account works well for entry-level coaching; Premium unlocks training load analytics and full performance data, which is recommended for getting the most out of your plan. If you're on Silver or Gold, Premium is included. We'll help you get set up as part of your onboarding.

All JM coaches hold UK Athletics qualifications and bring genuine competitive experience to their coaching.

Most runners notice improvements in how their training feels within 6–8 weeks of consistent structured work. For bigger goal targets — such as a sub-3 marathon — a full season build of 16–20 weeks is typically needed to peak at the right time. Consistency over time is what drives real progress, not quick fixes or short-term spikes.
